Metafora is a 17:30″ video documentary that explains the transformation of ‘Bacan,’ a Venetian dialect term for ‘islet’ within the Venice Lagoon. Led by Giovanni Cecconi, an expert with three decades of experience in the MOSE project, this journey combines scientific insight and revealing the island’s evolution in response to the innovative MOSE flat barrier technology, safeguarding the Venetian Lagoon from ‘Aqua Alta’ tides and floods.”

The video documentary about Metafora Island is designed to provide a scientifically-informed perspective on the unique transformation of the island, also called ‘bacan,’ which is a Venetian dialect word for ‘islet’ in the Venice Lagoon. The documentary captures the intriguing evolution of this island, guided by Giovanni Cecconi, a seasoned expert with three decades of experience in the MOSE project, specializing in storm-surge barriers and environmental adaptation.
Through a combination of field recordings and video taken using everyday tools like an iPhone and GoPro, the project initially aimed at straightforward documentation. However, under Giovanni’s expert speech, it soon expanded into a multi-faceted exploration. Giovanni Cecconi’s vast experience in managing sediment transport in complex hydro-morphological and socio-ecological systems, coupled with his expertise in designing nature-based coastal infrastructures, significantly influenced the project’s scientific approach.
The video “Metafora” is a combination of scientific explanation and artistic exploration that delves into the biological and ontological aspects of the transformation of a newly formed island due to the MOSE flat barrier technology, which protects the Venetian Lagoon from high tides and flooding known as Aqua Alta.

Video dokument o ostrově Metafora je informovaným pohledem na proměnu ostrova, nazývaného také ‘bacan,’ což je benátské dialektické slovo pro ‘malé ostrůvky,’ ve Venetské laguně. Dokument zachycuje evoluci tohoto ostrova pod vedením Giovanniho Cecconiho, zkušeného odborníka s třicetiletou praxí v projektu MOSE, specializujícího se na bariéry proti přílivu a adaptaci životního prostředí. Projekt se původně zaměřoval na jednoduchou dokumentaci pomocí kombinace terénních záznamů a videí pořízených běžnými nástroji, jako je iPhone a GoPro. Později se však rozvinul do vícestranného výzkumu.
Rozsáhlé zkušenosti Giovanniho Ceconniho v oblasti řízení přepravy sedimentů v komplexních hydro-morfologických a socio-ekologických systémech, spolu s jeho odbornými znalostmi v návrhu pobřežních infrastruktur, zásadně ovlivnily přístup k projektu.
Video “Metafora” spojuje vědecký výklad s uměleckým průzkumem, který se zabývá biologickými a ontologickými aspekty transformace nově vzniklého ostrova díky technologii ploché bariéry MOSE, jež chrání benátskou lagunu před přílivem a záplavami známými jako Aqua Alta.
Daniel Vlček
Multidisciplinary artist Daniel Vlček focuses on the fusion of sound and his personal visual expression in his work. He visualizes sound recordings, vibrations, and their spatial propagation in subjective patterns, with resulting shapes often reminiscent of technical drawings of sound waves. The themes of his works frequently highlight the interplay of causes and consequences, comment on industrial production and its impact on ecosystems, and delve into objective perceptions of time, collective memory, information storage, and transformation processes.
Daniel Vlček is a member of the art collective Guma Guar and a co-founder of the Prague galleries Berlínské Model and Ferdinand Bauman Gallery. In his role as a curator, he has organized two group exhibitions dedicated to the reflection of sound in contemporary visual art (16-20,000 Hz, Meetfactory, Prague, 2013, with M. Vojtěchovský; In the Beginning Was Silence, Pilsen City Gallery, 2014).
He is also engaged in his original music production, performing in the electroacoustic duo Ba:zel, and individually under the alias Relaxcore. Daniel Vlček is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he studied under Martin Mainer and Vladimír Skrepl, completed the New Media program under Veronika Bromová, and spent a semester at the Accademia di Brera in Milan under the guidance of Diego Espozito.

Multidisciplinární umělec Daniel Vlček se ve své tvorbě zaměřuje na spojení zvuku a jeho osobního vizuálního vyjádření. V jeho pracích vizualizuje zvukové záznamy, vibrace a jejich prostorové šíření v subjektivních vzorech, přičemž výsledné tvary často připomínají technické kresby zvukových vln. Témata jeho prací často zdůrazňují vzájemný vztah příčin a následků, komentují průmyslovou výrobu a její dopad na ekosystémy a zkoumají objektivní vnímání času, kolektivní paměť, ukládání informací a transformační procesy.
Daniel Vlček je členem umělecké skupiny Guma Guar a spoluzakladatelem pražských galerií Berlínské Model a Galerie Ferdinanda Bauman. V roli kurátora připravil dvě skupinové výstavy věnované reflexi zvuku v současném vizuálním umění (16-20,000 Hz, Meetfactory, Praha, 2013, s M. Vojtěchovským; Na počátku bylo ticho, Galerie města Plzně, 2014).
Rovněž se věnuje vlastní hudební produkci, vystupuje v elektroakustickém duu Ba:zel a samostatně pod pseudonymem Relaxcore. Daniel Vlček je absolventem Akademie výtvarných umění v Praze, kde studoval u Martina Mainera a Vladimíra Skrepla, absolvoval obor Nová média pod vedením Veroniky Bromové a strávil jeden semestr na Accademia di Brera v Miláně pod vedením Diega Espozita.
